WHY STUDY AT UNIVERSITY OF SPLIT’S CATHOLIC FACULTY OF THEOLOGY?

Completing study programs at the Catholic Faculty of Theology (KBF), University of Split, one fulfills the academic requirements for performing church services, opens the possibility of acting in scientific research, field of theology, humanities and social sciences, as well as religious education in schools or the community and working in culture, which requires education in humanities.

BRIEF HISTORY OF THE FACULTY

University of Split’s Catholic Faculty of Theology is located in the building of the Central Seminary since 1868. It was founded 1997 when Theology in Split and Franciscan Theology in Makarska merged. Both were included in the University of Zagreb since 1995, as branches of the Catholic Faculty of Theology. The agreement on association between Split’s Theology and Makarska’s Franciscan Theology, establishing the Catholic Faculty of Theology in Split was signed September 30, 1997.

The contract on the Catholic Faculty of Theology working within University of Split was signed July 9, 1999, and on the same day the Congregation for Catholic Education in the Vatican issued a decree establishing the Faculty.

GENERAL OBJECTIVE OF EDUCATION AT UNIVERSITY OF SPLIT’S CATHOLIC FACULTY OF THEOLOGY

The general objective is to achieve graduated students’ training and motivation to build a better, more humane and just society, to make teachers well known for their ideas and developing science, as well as to form-head initiatives promoting dialogue with the rest of the world and culture. As University of Split’s scientific and teaching component, organizing numerous scientific conferences, often with international participation, KBF greatly contributes to humanities within the university, but also humanities in general.

STUDY PROGRAMS:

• Integrated undergraduate and graduate philosophical and theological studies, Master of Arts in Theology

Competences acquired completing the study are theological-pastoral and teaching skills, as well as requirements for deaconry and presbytery. Students know and understand interpretation of basic texts in Christianity, philosophical thought, history of Christianity, church documents, dynamics of theological thought, religion’s social relevance and expressions.

Undergraduate theological catechetical study, Bachelor of Arts in Catechesis

Competences acquired completing this study are qualification-requirement for graduate theological-catechetical study, basic knowledge of Christianity and the Catholic Church’s origin and development, Christian perception of reality, Christian morality and basic didactics.

Graduate theological-catechetic study, Master of Arts in Catechesis

Competences acquired upon completion of studies are the ability for educational and teaching work in catechesis and religious education. Knowledge and understanding of the origin and development of Christianity. Ability to use church documents and guidelines.

Postgraduate study "Christianity and Contemporary Culture", acquiring the academic degree of licentiate (Master of Arts) in humanities, field of theological sciences with specialization (branch). The academic degree of doctorate in humanities is obtained, field of Theology, with specialization (branch).

Postgraduate study "History of Theology and Christian Institutions" acquires the academic degree of licentiate (Master of Arts) in humanities, field of theological science with specialization (branch). The academic degree of doctorate in humanities is obtained, field of Theology, with specialization (branch).

Competences acquired completing postgraduate studies are knowledge and skills required for independent scientific work in theology, especially in the field of a selected thematic unit (specialization) the student has written prepared a thesis on.

Completing a two-year specialist study to acquire licentiate, the student acquires skills at two levels: he is expected to be qualified for scientific research and, regarding teaching, he is qualified to work at theological faculties in church jurisdiction.

Completing one’s doctorate, the student is expected to have: advanced in scientific maturity; mastered method and texts relevant for his specialization; contributed to the progress of (theological) science with a dissertation; acquired the status of a scientist and so became qualified to continue scientific research work within selected field of study.

WHY CHOOSE UNIVERSITY OF SPLIT’S CATHOLIC FACULTY OF THEOLOGY?

• The Catholic Faculty of Theology is part of the University of Split’s family that, according to Times Higher Education 2021, occupied a place between 801-1000. on the world universities’ ranking list and for the first time has been the only Croatian university ranked in 10 of the 17 sustainable development goals, which puts it among top 4% in the world.

• CATHOLIC FACULTY OF THEOLOGY’S LIBRARY

The Catholic Faculty of Theology, University of Split, can also be proud of its rich library with a fund of about 50,000 volumes, of which: 107 volumes of 16th century materials, 314 volumes of 17th century materials, 1740 volumes of 18th century materials and 2,665 volumes of 19th century materials (until 1850).

We single out from the fund:

• Incunabula (3 - from 1471, 1498 and 1499) and books from the 16th century

• Editions in Croatian dating back since the 17th to middle of the 19th century.

• Works of Croatian authors in Latin

• Roman editions of missals and breviaries written in Glagolitic script

• Set of "Dalmazia cattolica - Catholic Dalmatia" newspapers

• Don Frane Bulić’s materials on early Christian Salona

• Bulić's copy of the “Bulletin di archeologia e storia dalmata” with his notes.

• EXTRACURRICULAR ENGAGEMENT OF UNIVERSITY IN SPLIT CATHOLIC FACULTY OF THEOLOGY STUDENTS

Students can develop love for writing and spiritual thought writing for "Odraz" - Faculty of Theology students’ journal, they can join the work of Students of Theology Association, "Stridon", which aims to achieve students’ of theology common interests and goals, to promote theology as a science and a teaching subject in order to meet modern society’s needs, or the association "Hrvatsko Nadzemlje", which operates within the Office for Youth Pastoral Care, of the Split-Makarska Archdiocese, bringing together young people in monthly meetings to debate important social issues.

• PROFESSIONAL ENGAGEMENT

Graduating from the Catholic Theological Faculty of the University of Split, in addition to all that was mentioned, employment can be found at: church institutions, scientific research institutions (institutes), cultural institutions, state institutions, media, publishing, civil society organizations, etc. There are opportunities for work providing spiritual assistance, work in missions and work that touches on broader cultural activities: publishing, work in the media, church administration, libraries, archives, pastoral care, family counseling, ethics committees.
