Celebrating European Maritime Day

University of Split’s SEA-EU project office, in cooperation with the Faculty of Maritime Studies, on Friday, May 28, marked the European Maritime Day with a series of lectures and a panel discussion. Prof. Pero Vidan Ph.D., Faculty of Maritime Studies’ Dean, congratulated everyone at the beginning and spoke-talked about the importance of the Faculty and the maritime industry. After his speech, the Faculty’s vice-dean for science, assist. prof. Hrvoje Dodig presented the Faculty’s focus on science, then Ivana Jadrić spoke about the SEA-EU alliance, assoc. prof. Zvonimir Lušić Ph.D. about Seafarers' Education and Navigation/Professional Practice and, finally, Zaloa Sanchez Varela presented the way from university to the career of a seafarer. Presentations were held in front of numerous students of the Faculty of Maritime Studies.

The knowledge and skills we need today for the future are: good organizational skills, communication skills, project-, finances- and time-management, controlling risks and stress, developing creativity, focus on problems; these are just part of information we learned in the panel discussion on: "Skills for the New Age". The following participants attended the panel: Darko Huljenić, Ericsson Nikola Tesla; Antonia Zebić, Port of Split; Helena Librenjak, Athos; Slobodan Maksimović, Armanija; Šime Šimat and Toni Jurić - Šolto, Centaurus Ltd., Tomislav Zajec and Luka Čadež, Brodosplit. Vice-rector prof. Leandra Vranješ Markić Ph.D. and Nikola Balić moderated the panel discussion aimed at identifying skills that employers lack today in order to do business in the future.

The University of Split wants to, with the SEA-EU project, more actively involve the business sector in developing educational programs. In addition to the discussion held, a series of discussions should take place at SEA-EU partner universities, as well as a joint meeting of all stakeholders to happen in Split. All employers are invited to contribute to education, especially by providing information on blue, green, digital and transversal skills they still need.
