Celebrating Day of the Faculty of Science

Thursday, May 27, marked the Day of the Faculty of Science (PMF) with the Faculty Council’s formal session. Along with professors and faculty members, this session was attended by the University of Split’s Rector, prof. Dragan Ljutić Ph.D. and vice-rectors: prof. Tomislav Kilić Ph.D., prof. Goran Kardum Ph.D., prof. Đurđica Miletić Ph.D.  and prof. Leandrom Vranješ Markić Ph.D.

Rector Ljutić congratulated the Faculty, an extremely important University’s component which contributes to the high ranking of the University of Split on world scales, with its long tradition of education and scientific work, especially considering the economic strength of some countries and their investments in higher education.

In his report, Faculty of Science’s Dean, prof. Nikola Koceić Bilan Ph.D., pointed out this higher education institution’s long tradition, celebrating its 76th birthday and 13 years of operation under its current name. He pointed out how PMF used this “pandemic” year for growth and development, not because of the building and its equipment, but thanks to hardworking and moderst people who work far from the spotlight, but were instrumental in building the Faculty. He mentioned that today Faculty of Science’s academic community has 150 employees and almost a thousand students.
He also commented on last year's exceptional contributions of all Faculty Departments: Department of Biology designing the graduate study of Molecular Biology, second of its kind in Croatia; Department of Chemistry’s contribution to equipping the building with valuable scientific research equipment and strengthening cooperation with economy; Department of Informatics coming up with graduate study Data Science and Engineering, also unique in Croatia; Polytechnic Department producing protective visors distributed to firefighters, police officers and the HGSS; Mathematics Department launching the graduate study Statistics and Computing, as well as publishing the first issue of the scientific mathematical journal "Acta Mathematica Spalatensia"; Department of Physics leading the Faculty in terms of science, and new graduate studies in English, Astrophysics, Particle Physics and Environmental Physics also pending.
Celebration of the Faculty’s Day was also an opportunity to present awards and recognitions to researchers, teaching and non-teaching staff and students.
